Opener's Rebid
Why the rebid matters: refining your message
The Third Bid Completes the Story
The opening bid was your first sentence. The response was your partner's reply. Now comes the rebid — the third bid in the auction — and it's where the picture comes into focus.
Consider what's happened so far. When you opened 1♠, you told partner: "I have 13-21 points and 5+ spades." That's a range of 9 points — quite wide. Partner doesn't know if you have a bare-minimum 13-point hand or a robust 20-point hand. Your rebid narrows that range dramatically.
Why the Rebid Is So Important
After the opening bid and response, the partnership knows:
- Approximately where the combined strength lies
- Whether a trump fit might exist
After the rebid, the partnership usually knows:
- Precisely the opener's strength (minimum, medium, or maximum)
- The opener's shape (how many cards in each suit)
- Where the contract should be (partscore, game, or slam)
The rebid transforms a rough sketch into a detailed picture.
The Three Strength Categories
For rebid purposes, opener's hands fall into three ranges:
| Category | Points | Rebid Style |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 13-15 | Make the cheapest, most descriptive bid |
| Medium | 16-18 | Jump or make an invitational bid |
| Maximum | 19-21 | Jump to game or make a forcing bid |
The key insight: your rebid shows which category you're in. A simple rebid says minimum. A jump says medium. A double jump or game bid says maximum.
What's Ahead
In this level, we'll cover rebids from every angle:
- Opener's rebid after a 1-level response — the most common scenario
- Opener's rebid after partner raises — you've found a fit, now how high?
- Opener's rebid after a 1NT response — partner has limited their hand
- Responder's second bid — yes, responder rebids too!
- Finding the contract — tracing complete auctions from start to finish
By the end of this level, you'll be able to conduct a complete uncontested auction — from opening bid through final contract. That's a major milestone in your bridge education.
Let's complete the picture.
